The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation, established in 1981, is a philanthropic organization that aggregates charitable gifts from donors and provides leadership and financial leverage in addressing the needs of Pierce County through various grantmaking programs. The Community Foundation actively inspires philanthropy and increases permanent resources for Pierce County, Washington. We create maximum positive impact through our grantmaking, outreach and investments in the community. We collaborate with individuals, businesses and community partners to initiate change and develop solutions to longstanding challenges. It is with this expertise that we are able to act as the bridge between donors and powerful, long-term community impact. Today, the Community Foundation is home to over 450 individual funds, holds more than $61 million in assets and distributed more than $78 million in grants over the last 29 years. Community foundations are tax-exempt public charities serving thousands of people who share a common interest—improving the quality of life in their area. Individuals, families, businesses, and organizations create permanent charitable funds that help their region meet local challenges.
There are approximately 750 community foundations in the United States, making it one of the fastest growing sectors of philanthropy today. The primary work of a community foundation is to inspire and work with donors to design gift plans that fit their charitable wishes and make responsive grants to nonprofit organizations working within the community.
