As your philanthropic partner in Pierce County, The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation would like to provide you with information about the natural disaster in the southern Asia country of Myanmar.
Please let us know if you have any questions or need assistance in directing donations.
Devastation in Myanmar: Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar on May 2, 2008, pounding the country with 10 hours of rain, packing winds of up to 190 kph. State media sources report that more than 22,000 are dead; 41,000 remain missing. The full extent of the damage is unknown due to severely disrupted communications systems, power outages and impassable roads strewn with debris and uprooted trees. Information on the worst-hit area—the southwest delta—is still unavailable. Authorities indicate villages in this area may have been completely flattened.
How You Can Help: Many of the international relief organizations have had a difficult time being allowed in the country to provide assistance. However, some organizations, such as WorldVision, are now in the country and able to provide immediate assistance.

In speaking with a representative from WorldVision today, they provided us with the following statement:
“The government of Myanmar has sought out World Vision’s expertise in responding to the disaster and has requested that World Vision provide assistance in the form of zinc sheets, tents, tarpaulins and medicine. In response, World Vision is now launching a US $3 million, multi-phased aid response to benefit 250,000 people. During the first 30 days, the response will focus on 50,000 families by providing food/non-food items, shelter, and water/sanitation. World Vision assessment teams have been deployed to the hardest-hit areas to determine the most urgent needs. The agency is already providing clothing (sarongs and T-shirts) as well as tarpaulins and blankets to disaster-affected households in the capital, along with 10,000 kg of rice and 7,400 liters of water. Your partnership with World Vision will help deliver critically needed shelter materials, water purification systems, medicine and food to families devastated by Cyclone Nargis.”
